What this macro area covers

These pages explain the architectural pressure UMA responds to, the difference between ownership of a platform and ownership of a capability, and why portable behavior is a better long-term boundary for distributed systems.

Most distributed systems teams already know how to ship services. The harder question is what happens when the same business behavior needs to run in more than one place and starts drifting. A feature flag evaluator copied from backend to browser. A discount rule reimplemented in an edge function. A validation step added silently to an AI-adjacent workflow. Each copy started for a good reason. None of them share a contract. None of them are guaranteed to stay in sync.

This area starts from that pressure. It does not assume the reader needs a new framework or a new deployment tool. It assumes the reader has seen a system grow more fragile as execution spread, and wants a model for why that happens and what a different architectural center of gravity looks like.

The central shift UMA proposes is from stack ownership to behavior ownership. Stack ownership is the default: a team owns a frontend, a backend, a data layer. Behavior ownership asks a harder question: who owns the rule, and can the rule survive when the stack changes? That reframing is where this section begins.
